Why this backpack? Well, I’ve got a small problem.

Equipment. Gear. Kit. Backpacks.

You may have the same problem.

Backpacks may be my biggest problem.

Let’s call it a “challenge.” I’m always on the hunt for the “right” backpack. That’s my personal challenge.

A bit over a year ago I stumbled across Inside Line Equipment through my friend and Omata Ambassador Cody Chouinard. It immediately caught my eye.

Then I met their Founder/CEO Eric Fisher at NAHBS. We talked for awhile and I decided I like what he said, I like what they were creating and I loved that they made their bags in the East Bay there in Berkeley. There was an easy-going way to our conversation, having something to do with both being Founder/CEOs, small operators, feeling scrappy and hungry and ready to get after the dream no matter what.

I bought one and lived and traveled with it and decided I could stand by it in the way one can stand by something one believes in.

Eric felt the same about what Cary and I were doing down the California coast here at Omata. Two small operators building communities and products they want for themselves. Doing it fueled by passion, persistence, grit and a fair bit of hope that others out there who are tired of mass-market, fast-fashion, landfill will feel the same way they do.

We worked out a simple custom program to represent this shared spirit and ambition, which we’re happy to offer to you to collaborations.

This is the Omata + ILE Assignment Mini Backpack, a 18L weatherproof rolltop pack, handmade in California with a weatherpoof fleece lined padded laptop sleeve that fits a 15” MacBook Pro.

I’ve lived with this one for a fair bit now and it has been working as a camera + riding bag and general carry for when I’m not working at the home studio. It’s also done super well as an efficient overnight bag on a few trips. We’re doing this in two color+materials: Black XPAC and MultiCam Black Cordura.

I also wanted to do a seat bag — another of my obsessions. (You can tell a lot about someone by their seat bag, by the way. Think about it as you observe folks and the fit and form of their seat bags on your next group ride.)

We’re doing the Omata + ILE Seat Bag All Mountain, a tight seat bag that splits the difference between size and convenience by being big enough to carry essentials but not so big as to allow you to pack your fears.
